J. M. Prigmore

Fantasy has always been a staple for me, even going back to some of the first books I remember reading, like the Redwall series. Imagining worlds where the rules of our mundane world can be altered or broken has always fascinated me, and whether its D&D campaigns, short stories or novels, I've loved creating worlds like that my entire life. As someone who loves the sciences however, I'm drawn to think about magic and fantasy from a more grounded perspective, imagining how such things could work while taking aspects of the real world into account.

While I'll never claim I'm a fan of horror, I do appreciate what emotions it can evoke in a person. For me personally, the dread of the unknown has always been a draw, a source of creative inspiration. Along those lines, monsters that stand outside the known rules of life and nature have always interested me. As a boy I was obsessed with dragons and cryptids (some might say I'm still obssessed with dragons), and that slowly morphed into wanting to explore how monsters might exist in a world hindered by physiological and biological limitations.

Having grown up in small town central Texas, I never quite fit in with the ranching and truck loving folk I was surrounded by, which led me to explore media and ideas later in life than many of my more urban friends. Learning so much about myself and the world in my early twenties was eye opening, and it lead directly into the themes of my first book, The Red Mother. Even still, I can't help but have some of those small town influences bleed into my work at times.

When I'm not lost in my own imagination, I'm likely either gaming with my friends or watching too much anime. I generally don't share much on social media, but if you're looking to learn more about me or my interests, feel free to ask me whatever's on your mind at jmprigmorewrites@gmail.com!
